Captain Steve Bailey Charters
Join me as I guide fly fishing and light tackle charters in the waters surrounding Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Island, Cayo Costa and the near shore Gulf waters of Fort Myers in Lee County, Florida.
I specialize in fly-fishing charters and light spin tackle trips around Sanibel and southwest Florida. I use artificial lures or shrimp to fish for a wide variety of shallow water species depending on time of year and availability. I can accommodate up to 2 passengers. Younger family members are more than welcome.
The fishery for most species, including Snook, Redfish and Spotted Sea-Trout, is year round here. Some fish, such as Tarpon, are only available seasonally. The time to plan a trip for Tarpon is mid-April through mid-June when the run of migratory fish is coming through on the beaches and inside bays. Resident Tarpon are a possibility during July, August and September, but not a target time.
Other species include Mangrove Snapper, Tripletail, Cobia, Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Sheepshead,
Ladyfish, King Mackerel and Jacks. All are wonderful fish to catch when matched with the
right tackle.
The time of year, tide level and species sought determines the type of fly fishing or light tackle fishing we might do. Under the right conditions we could:
1. Use the push pole to
move onto a shallow flat sight casting
to individual fish on the grass or laying in sand holes.
2. Motor into a creek
to fish deep holes in bends and under Mangrove overhangs. Tight
quarters, but at times very rewarding
3. On higher tides, fish deep holes beside islands for Snook, Redfish
and Mangrove Snapper. Poling sandy shorelines looking for cruising or
laid up fish is another option.
Don't forget your camera! Lee County and the beaches of Sanibel, Captiva and other areas offer numerous opportunities for great photos to remember your trip. Walking a beach looking for shells, or casting at a fish in the surf is not a bad way to spend a summer morning. This is especially productive on the upper islands of North Captiva and Cayo Costa. Most of Cayo Costa is a State Park and is assessable only by boat. Sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico can be spectacular, with the right conditions. Bring plenty of film or digital space and be ready to use it.
Whether you want to learn to tie a Bimini Twist, improve your casting or just relax with some time on the water, I will do my best to meet your expectations. My goal is to provide you with a safe and memorable experience.
