A Perfect Morning for Tarpon on Fly

May 2006 - David Craven is a skilled fisherman with a fly rod. Also with plug tackle, and you see quite a few photos of him on my website. While we were fishing, we were blessed with a perfect morning for Tarpon; no wind.

In early morning, when the wind is light to calm, the Tarpon will be up rolling and very willing to take a properly presented fly.

These pictures show a result of that, as well as the correct way to "bow" to a jumping Tarpon and putting maximum pressure on a fish to ensure a healthy release.

Notice the rod never is pulled to a full bend. When the angle of the rod is greater than 45°, there is less pressure on the fish and something may break, the leader or the rod, when the fish lunges away.

Florida Keys

Once in a while we make the trip down. Always a nice getaway, especially with wonderful friends like Ray and Sally. And, sometimes even the fish cooperate.
